The maritime pine of the Rione di Porta Ravegnana recalls the connection with the important commercial port on the Adriatic coast, located at north of the city. Also in the northern part of the countryside there was also the castle of Granarolo, built in 1317 by Francesco Manfredi to better guard the countryside between Cotignola and Russi, which sees its castellan and its insignia present in the ranks of the ‘Rione Nero’ (Black district). However, the true heart of the Rione is located between the city walls, where the Monte di Pietà rose (founded in 1491 and used for centuries as a low interest bank for the poor and as a public treasury, from 1510 it took its place next to the Cathedral) and above all in Via della Croce, from the name of the Confraternity present in the fifteenth century, now the seat of Rione Nero.
The headquarters of the Rione is located within a courtyard area where all the local activities are carried out (preparation of the flag-wavers and musicians accompanying the parade on the day of the Palio del Niballo) as well as the cultural and recreational side events engaging people of any age. In the venue, the red satin draperies are witnessed jealously witnessing the victories achieved in the race of the Palio. As proof of victories there are also the golden towers and the silver towers, the latter destined to the winners of the flag-waving competition in the discipline of the traditional couple flag-wavers. Upstairs there is a small museum where the rich parade costumes worn during the parades are kept, including the insignia of the Marini, Fadini and Giangrandi local families: families that have given as many names to the streets of the Rione. The façade displays ceramic panels in memory of the palios won by the knights, created by the best masters of ceramics art in Faenza.
